We’ve previously blogged about the best residential heat pumps. But did you know there is more to Lodi cooling & heating efficiency? We will show statistics from experts, as well as our opinion.

1. Department of Energy

The DOE sets its minimum standard of requirements for AC systems used across the country in residences, businesses, etc. The kind of cooling and heating system you may purchase is based on where you live. These systems include furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners, and more. Regional standards are put into place in order to save an approximate $4.2 billion in energy costs in the United States, not to mention reduce emissions.

2. Know the Measurements

The DOE, as well as many heating and cooling manufacturers, can use a different metric to measure the energy efficiency of the unit. They are as follows:

  1. SEER – Also known as the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, it is the measurement of efficiency calculated by the cooling output for a typical summer and warm season divided by the total power usage during the same period. For example, you may measure how many kilowatt hours were used by your cooling system during the summer.
  2. EER – The Energy Efficiency Ratio differs in that it measures the ratio of the system’s total cooling output to the energy it used at a specific operating point. It is primarily used for cooling systems, or the ones we use in Lodi.
  3. HSPF – The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is likewise used for heat pumps. It measures the ratio of total heating output from a system to the energy it uses over time.

3. What are the Standards?

We in Lodi and the surrounding areas live in the Southwest region of the country. As such, our minimum standard for any equipment is 14 SEER including heat pumps, package heat pumps, split system heat pumps, split system ACs, and package air conditioners. For package air conditioners, the minimum standards are 11.0 ER. Split system ACs have a minimum EER of 11.7. Split system heat pumps must have a minimum HSPF of 8.2, and package heat pumps must have a minimum HSPF of 8.o.

4. Are Those the Top Cooling & Heating Standards?

Absolutely not. Many units can get well up into the 20 SEER level. We’ve seen a Carrier AC with a 26 SEER rating. However, you don’t want to purchase a unit just because it has a high SEER, EER, or other rating. You must find one that is quality and built to last. This is why we recommend units made by Trane, Goodman, RUUD, Rheem, Lennox, Carrier, and many others. Finally, you must also choose a unit that is the right size for your property as well as offers the right power for your needs.
